Busy Doing Nothing

May 30th, 2008 fraservafull No comments

Everyone seems to be busy.  But, is being busy a good thing, or are we just avoiding the big things in our lives?

It’s one thing to know what you need to do to succeed.  It’s quite another to actually do the things that will make you successful.

How much of your time is spent productively, focused on those tasks that will lead you to success?

One of my clients, a financial advisor, is busy doing research for target marketing.  He is so busy doing research that he is missing obvious opportunities to meet new prospects.

The research makes great intellectual sense.  But not at the expense of losing opportunities.  It’s just not practical.

There are a couple of mindset changes helpful to average achievers with high achiever dreams.

1.  Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.

Outsourcing can significantly improve your productivity.  Hire others to do the work that sucks the life from you.  Chances are, there is someone for which the same task fills them up with energy.

2.  Understand the difference between efficient and effective.

Efficient means you do the task in an organized, expeditious way.  It does not mean the task was worth doing.

Completing something effectively means that, by doing it, something important moves forward.

Winners effectively decide what does and does not need doing, as well as who should be doing it.

The next time you notice you’re “busy,” or hear yourself telling someone that you are, I encourage you to change your language.  Find ways to be productive and effective.

Being productive will lead to crossing things off your list simply because they don’t need doing.  Then, bask in the liberating feeling of having accomplished something by doing nothing at all.

Now, what will you do with all the extra time you’ve created?  Send me an e-mail at charrise@emergencebiz.com.  Include your creative ideas and I will provide free coaching around them.

And don’t tell me you’re too busy.

Is Work the Weight On Your Back?

May 29th, 2008 fraservafull No comments

What is your first thought when you wake up?  Okay, besides using the bathroom?

For most, it’s “I wish I didn’t have to work today!”

Why do so many of us spend endless days doing work that we don’t love?  Sometimes, it’s because we feel as if we have no choice. Work equals money.

Most people work to live instead of livng to work.  And the state of mediocrity and monotony that comes with this weighs heavier each day we do it.

If the weight of work is on your shoulders, join me on  Friday, June 6, from 11:30 to 12:30, for my  webinar,  “When Work is Play!”

This will give you a starting point on how to either love the work you’re doing, or get motivated to find work that you do love.  You will also gain a different perspective on what you are doing with your work life.

How do others see you at work?  Are you fulfilling your life purpose with the work that you do?  Together we will discover the secret to returning a sense of joy to  working.

We will identify actionable strategy to return you to a path with heart, rather than a path driven by fear.  Your new attitude will be apparent  and the weight you’ve carried for so long will be lifted.

Most of us spend more time at work than anywhere else.  We go through our workdays dreaming of retirement.  As we do this, we are not really living our life, we’re wishing it away.

There is a way out of this cycle.

To begin the process, register today for the webinar “When Work Is Play!”, and start feeling fulfilled and purposeful with your work.

6 Things A Day Keeps Insomnia Away

May 28th, 2008 fraservafull No comments

A common issue for business owners and leaders is the overwhelming feeling that there is too much to do in a given day.

As I’ve said before, there is always enough time in a day to do what needs doing.  We all get 24 hours, every day.  And we all make choices about how much work to do, how much sleep we need, and how much time we spend relaxing.

Having balance is important, but balance is different for everyone.  It’s a very personal choice.

There is no magic formula for structuring your day.  Each day brings varying challenges.  Your day may go as predicted, or it may take a sharp turn toward something urgent.  Inevitably, some days, your plans will go out the window!

As a business coach, I’ve coached people through this by suggesting that, each day, they make a list of only  6 things they are committed to accomplishing.

The 6 things can be big or small, easy or difficult.  Perferably, there will be a balanced mix.  The list can only include 6 things that can reasonably be accomplished that day.  And you commit to not ending your day until you have finished these 6 things.

This works for many reasons, including that it is a manageable expectation.

We’ve all made lists before, and we’ve all been overwhelmed once we’ve identified everything that’s going on.

By limiting your list to just 6 things, you can create more reasonable expectations for yourself. As you focus on what did get done, worry about what didn’t get done will dissipate.  Sleep will come easier knowing you did what you committed to doing for the day.

This technique is most successful if practiced until it becomes routine.  At some point, identifying realistic expectations for what you can accomplish in a day will become second nature.

Fill your mind with positive thoughts.

Grab a pen.

Make a list of 6 things you will accomplish today.

And set yourself up for success.
