Busy Doing Nothing
Everyone seems to be busy. But, is being busy a good thing, or are we just avoiding the big things in our lives?Â
It’s one thing to know what you need to do to succeed. It’s quite another to actually do the things that will make you successful.Â
How much of your time is spent productively, focused on those tasks that will lead you to success?Â
One of my clients, a financial advisor, is busy doing research for target marketing. He is so busy doing research that he is missing obvious opportunities to meet new prospects.Â
The research makes great intellectual sense. But not at the expense of losing opportunities. It’s just not practical.
There are a couple of mindset changes helpful to average achievers with high achiever dreams.
1. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.Â
Outsourcing can significantly improve your productivity. Hire others to do the work that sucks the life from you. Chances are, there is someone for which the same task fills them up with energy.
2. Understand the difference between efficient and effective.
Efficient means you do the task in an organized, expeditious way. It does not mean the task was worth doing.
Completing something effectively means that, by doing it, something important moves forward.Â
Winners effectively decide what does and does not need doing, as well as who should be doing it.
The next time you notice you’re “busy,” or hear yourself telling someone that you are, I encourage you to change your language. Find ways to be productive and effective.Â
Being productive will lead to crossing things off your list simply because they don’t need doing. Then, bask in the liberating feeling of having accomplished something by doing nothing at all.
Now, what will you do with all the extra time you’ve created? Send me an e-mail at charrise@emergencebiz.com. Include your creative ideas and I will provide free coaching around them.
And don’t tell me you’re too busy.
