Teachers and Gurus

February 2nd, 2010 coachcharrise 1 comment

I have been thinking a great deal about the impact we have on other’s lives. I realize there is a lot of talk about gurus and teachers, and when I think about my life and all the lessons I’ve learned – the lessons come just as often from regular ‘ol people. I’ve had some wonderful teachers, and some from unlikely places. It’s the constant process of listening and learning and being open to the lessons that really matters.

Have I read a lot of books written by teachers and gurus that have caused me to think and re-think important concepts? Sure. I continue my commitment to be a life-long learner, and love knowing that people are writing books that will help me learn and grow. That said, there is a limit to what I’ll learn through books. I learn much more from real people – and more importantly, through my interaction with those people.

I’m not knocking gurus – I think that sometimes we place them on a pedestal which inadvertently puts them just past our reach. I know that magic happens when I am with someone who questions my logic, and whose logic I can also question. The more I relate with others as people on a similar journey, the less alone I feel.

Teachers and gurus serve a purpose, and so does the courageous action of stepping into the ring and playing full out no matter who you are.

Come on in, the water is just fine.
